Twentieth Century-Fox’s 3-D extravaganza, “Avatar,” got off to a slower than expected start over the weekend as record-breaking snowfall kept many on the East Coast away from theaters. But the numbers will likely improve as the snow melts, adding a last-minute jolt to what has turned out to be a pretty solid year for Hollywood at the box office.
