A couple of late-day items could have significant effects on their markets, but neither is particularly positive for the vendors involved. First is news that Intel is shelving its anticipated CPU-GPU hybrid Larrabee chip, releasing it now only as a development platform for graphics. NVIDIA and AMD must be grinning from ear to ear. The other news is that Larry Ellison might be considering creating a separate entity within Oracle-Sun to handle MySQL. After months of butting heads with the EU, it looks like Oracle might be willing to bend just a little to stop the $100 million a month bloodshed it’s experiencing as the deal languishes. The question is: Will this concession be enough to satisfy the EU, or will a sale be the only option to secure approval?
