Verizon Wireless Wants You To Know Droids Are For Men

Verizon's Droid Ad: "Should a phone be pretty"

If it wasn’t obvious already, the Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Droid, which is being heavily marketed by Verizon Wireless, is targeting the male population. While there’s been plenty of signs pointing to its masculinity before now, a new Verizon TV commercial confirms it. The ad’s voice-over declares: , “Should a phone be pretty? Should it be a tiara wearing digitally clueless beauty pageant queen? Or should it be fast? Racehorse duct-taped to a Scud missile fast.”

Don’t worry Verizon, if you were concerned about it appealing to women, it wasn’t ever a problem. Putting all concerns aside about stereotypes, the Droid is noticeably masculine. Starting with its looks, the device is solid black and is squared off on every corner. There’s not an elegant bone in its body. Even the homescreen sports a steel-grey display. When you get an email, a robotic voice says “DROID.” That’s OK. Verizon Wireless is no slouch when it comes to marketing, so it must have done its research. If the iPhone was more attractive to woman (which we have a hard time believing), then perhaps it’s smart to go after the other half of the population. But they should be careful. Why alienate women if you don’t have to…? Not to mention, I don’t think all men are looking for their phone to fulfill their power tool dreams. Commercial embedded after the jump…
