In some ways, popular social games like Mafia Wars and Sorority Life are already massively-multiplayer online (MMO) games — they’re played online, there are millions of people playing, and players need to work together to get ahead. But people hungry for high-quality, World of Warcraft-style games on their phones and social networks currently have limited options. Companies like ngmoco and Playdom are working to change that, and so is a new startup called Good Game Productions.
Founded this year by game industry vet Grantley Day, San Diego-based Good Game’s goal is to help game developers and publishers port their existing PC-based MMOs to the iPhone and Facebook. It’s a cost-effective business model, since the startup won’t have to invest the millions up front currently needed to build a game from scratch — not to mention market it in the hopes of growing a huge audience.
No details on whether Good Game is bootstrapped or backed by VCs yet, but the company says it has a “small” development team already, with “a number of” games and apps currently in development. Good Game is working with online games and micro-payment service GoCash and South Korean MMO developer Ntreev, and plans to launch its first product “this winter.” Release.
