Organic growth stories are nice, but Susan Boyle started at the top, on a mainstream television show.
Now, it’s time to cash in. Last week, Susan Boyle dismantled sales records in the UK, and the US is next. Boyle shifted more than 411,000 units in Britain in her debut week, an all-time high according to the Official Charts Company.
Stateside, the number will be higher, but the record a bit less spectacular.
Early indicators suggest first-week sales levels well past 600,000 on I Dreamed a Dream, enough to beat out Eminem’s Relapse mark of 608,000 for a 2009 record. That easily puts the US+UK tally past one million, and Boyle is easily topping charts across other global markets.
Great news for Boyle, who found herself penniless after breaking YouTube viewing records. But the dream of monetization is now reality, thanks to a more traditional audience and a huge underdog story stoked by Britain’s Got Talent. Also celebrating is label Sony (NYSE: SNE) Music, also poised to benefit from Michael Jackson stocking stuffers.
