Perhaps the timing is simply a coincidence, but Google’s announcement today that it will give publishers a way to limit free access to their paid news sites through Google News comes one day after Google had a tough day at the FTC’s workshop on journalism in the Internet age. While there wasn’t a lot new said at the event, the format involved a government agency giving a platform to News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch and other old-media bigwigs to bash new media for its “promiscuous” ways, at a time when Google is facing heightened government scrutiny on multiple fronts.
