The consensus buzz is that Comcast and GE are very close to reaching a deal for NBC Universal. A key piece fell into place Friday, when Vivendi, which still owns 20 percent of NBC Uni, won its long battle to acquire Brazilian telco provider GVT for $4.1 billion. Analysts are convinced Viv will use the proceeds from a sale of its NBC stake to pay for the deal. With Vivendi on board, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts is on the verge of achieving what he has long sought: to build the cable company into a media powerhouse rivaling Disney, Viacom and Time Warner. Before that can happen, though, the NBC deal will likely undergo lengthy and close scrutiny by U.S. regulators.
