The Party Line — Phone Buzz of the Day

Here are some of today’s phone conversations I enjoyed reading or viewing on the web, along with some brief thoughts:

googlevoicemailConditional forwarding now free on Sprint (PreCentral) — A few weeks ago, Google introduced some Google Voice services for non-GV numbers. The main offering revolved around using Google’s voicemail in lieu of the cellular carrier’s voicemail service. At the time, Sprint was charging $0.20 per minute for forwarded calls, so many Sprintsters held off. No need to be cautious now though — as expected Sprint has removed the fee on conditional forwarding, so you can use Google Voice for voicemail without additional charges.

100,000 enlist in the Droids army (Bloomberg) — Early estimates peg Verizon Droid sales at 100,000 in the first weekend of availability. That says something about the prior stock of Verizon smartphones in my book. I’m also wondering if the Eris actually outsells the Droid over the long haul and how many Droid sales were defectors from other carriers.

samsung-logoSamsung decides to float its own mobile OS (bada) — Just when I thought we had too many mobile platforms, I see there’s another one coming. Samsung launched “bada,” their own open platform, but hasn’t provided many details. All of the buzzwords and catch-phrases are there though: “easy-to-integrate platform,” “ground-breaking User Interface (UI)” and “simple for developers to use” are all in the plan. Bada is the Korean word for “ocean,” so we’ll see if the idea cruises or if it’s a sinking ship.
