Vivek Shah, the digital head at news division of Time Inc, is leaving the company after 15 years, paidContent has learned and confirmed from the company. He is there till the end of this year and transition plans are being worked out. Technically the company won’t be hiring a replacement, but out of the four digital GMs who were reporting to Shah, John Cantarella, Time.com’s GM, will become the uber GM, so to speak, with others reporting into him. Shah told me: “After 15 years at Time Inc, this is a perfect time for me to depart. There are all sorts of possibilities in the digital word and I will be exploring it.” He told me he doesn’t have anything imminent, but wants to go into a business that is natively digital.
Among other things, Shah was responsible for the launch of Time Inc-Turner JV site CNNMoney.com, and for a year until last year, was also the head/publisher of the Fortune/Money Group, before coming back to head digital all across Time Inc.
For people who know him, the move out of Time Inc has been coming for a while, between the company’s latest efforts to figure out its future and Shah’s itching to do something more entrepreneurial. Time Inc.’s reported cost-saving plans, in the form of major layoffs, are supposed to come this week. From what we understand, almost none will come from digital.
