Aviary Raises $7 Million From Spark Capital, Bezos For Online Image Editing Suite

Aviary

Aviary, a startup that is trying to take on Adobe (NSDQ: ADBE) with a suite of sophisticated web-based image editing tools aimed at artists, has raised $7 million in a second round of funding led by Spark Capital. Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) CEO Jeff Bezos’ personal investment firm, Bezos Expeditions, also participated.

Aviary has an online image editor — called Phoneix — as well as some specialized apps, including a color palette picker, an audio editor, an “effects editor,” and a vector editor. All are free to use, although there’s also a $24.99 a year “pro” version, which is aimed at commerical users. Adobe, of course, has fired back at online competitors, including Aviary and Picnik, which has a more consumer-centric focus, with a web-based editing service of its own, Photoshop.com.
