Bought a Kindle2 for $299? Amazon Offers $40 Refunds

Kindle 2One of the challenges we often face when purchasing mobile technology is when the price drops. Invariably, it drops after the purchase, just like the original iPhone did only weeks after introduction. I bought my Amazon Kindle2 when the device first launched, so I anticipated an “early adopter tax” and didn’t balk at the $359 price tag. My wife Barb liked the device so much that she wanted to get her own. We might have made do with one, but I read on mine daily. We also head in different directions for the kid’s activities so I often have the device. So, a few weeks ago, she paid the price of $299 and received her Kindle2 on September 23rd.

Sure enough, when I mentioned today that the price dropped $40, so did her jaw. I’m used to this type of pricing change, but this was her first experience. Well, chalk one up for my wife because she got her $40 back already. She knew that Amazon has a 30-day return policy and since she purchased within that window, she figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask for the price difference. One short note to Amazon’s customer service yielded her a nice return email and a $40 credit — all in under ten hours! Here’s an excerpt of the Amazon response:

“Thank you for writing to us with your concern. Because you were charged a higher price for your Kindle than what is currently being offered, I’ll issue a refund for the price difference in the amount of $40. You should see the refund in the next 2-3 business days. We can only refund for Kindle price changes that occur within 30 days from the time your Kindle order is shipped. I hope this helps. We look forward to seeing you again soon.”

If you bought a Kindle2 in the last 30 days, I highly recommend you reach out to Amazon’s customer service. There’s a good chance you’ll see a $40 credit, but only if you ask.
