ESPN Star Sports Wins Exclusive Rights To Barclays Premier League


Broadcaster ESPN (NYSE: DIS) Star Sports has won multi-platform media rights for the Barclays Premier League in India. The company said it will be broadcasting 380 matches live across television, Internet and mobile. The channel plans to make 190 matches available on a video-on-demand basis.

ESPN Star Sports has also bagged the exclusive rights for 17 other markets in Asia, including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and Maldives. ESPN has been broadcasting BPL in India since 1995 and the company said the property has enjoyed massive growth in India.

“This renewal underlines our commitment to football fans in India as we continue providing the most compelling content to our viewers and an excellent promotional platform for our business partners,” Manu Sawhney, MD, ESPN Star Sports, said in a statement.

ESPN Star Sports is an equal stakes JV between ESPN Inc. (owned by Walt Disney) and News Corp (NYSE: NWS).
