WiMAX Found in City of Brotherly Wireless Love?

clear-philadelphia-4gSo there’s no official press release, but CLEAR’s WiMAX coverage map shows a big, green blob of 4G in my backyard. According to the map, CLEAR’s 4G service is ready to be paired with your cheesesteak in Philadelphia, Sidecut Reports says. Of course, that’s to be expected since Philly was on the short list of major metro areas planned for 2009. According to the map, future coverage will extend a fair bit beyond Philadelphia — it could possibly reach my home area (about 25 miles from the city limits) and will spider into large areas across the Delaware River as well.

But even if CLEAR makes it up to my neck of the woods, I don’t think it’s for me just yet. The key factor for any wireless broadband service is coverage where you need it. Although I don’t travel much, I do roam around in Las Vegas and San Francisco a few times a year for work. CLEAR already offers 4G service in Sin City, but all bets are off for San Fran until sometime in 2010. Then again, there are pay-as-you-go options for both 3G and WiMAX, so that puts me in the “definite maybe” category. While I wrestle with that, and some 4G horror stories, have a look-see at the coverage areas in Philly to see if your area is lit or on the “coming soon” list.
