National Geographic Society, pointing to the need to cut costs amid a continued ad slump, has ousted group publisher Steve Giannetti president, MinOnline reported, citing a staff memo from John Griffin, the president, publishing. Giannetti had been with the magazine for nine years and was credited with starting many of its digital initiatives. Giannetti’s sales and marketing duties will be shifted to Nat Geo VP/U.S. publisher Claudia Malley.

Along with Giannetti, the mag has also pushed out Global Media Integrated Sales and Sponsorships VP/travel Dawn Drew and executive assistant Leslie Armstrong. Drew started took the post last January after a decade serving as Nat Geo’s Traveler publisher.

The dismissals come just two months after Nat Geo hired Robert Michael Murray as its first VP of social media.
