RIP Microsft Recite
It was only in February of this year that we told you about a cool, new voice technology that Microsoft was rolling out for Windows Mobile. Recite was only a technical preview but it showed real innovation in the ability to enter information via speech, and to use voice queries on Windows Mobile phones to find those nuggets of information. It showed real promise and readers who gave it try came away duly impressed with the possibilities the technology opened up. Unfortunately, Recite will never realize its potential as Microsoft has notified users that it will go away at the end of the year.
From the Recite web site:
Microsoft will no longer be offering the Microsoft Recite Technology Preview as of December 31, 2009. After this date you will no longer be able to access Microsoft Recite from your mobile phone. The Microsoft Recite Team thanks you for your valuable feedback on this product. The ability to capture notes and reminders is an area we are still focused on and we will continue to consider your feedback to build out these rich experiences in upcoming products.
Recite users will need to capture any information created with Recite to a PC to retain it. Microsoft has a guide to make this process easier.
It’s a shame this has been discontinued so quickly. Recite showed real promise in giving Windows Mobile a technical advantage so desperately needed, especially given Ballmer’s admission that they are lagging the competition. The short Recite experiment is reminiscent of the very advanced Deepfish browser. That technical preview for Windows Mobile was killed off by Microsoft, too.
