Here are some of today’s phone conversations I enjoyed reading or viewing on the web, along with some brief thoughts:
Will Motorola’s Android handset “cliq” at $199? (Barron’s) — $199 seems to be the initial entry point for many phones today, so I’m not totally surprised by this. But I wonder if Motorola could have generated more interest at $149 or even $99 for their first Android entry. MOTOBLUR is an attempt to differentiate this handset from the growing number of other Android phones, but a sweet deal could have done even more. Existing customers can get the pre-order price starting October 19.
Dropbox client arrives on iPhone (Dropbox) — One of my fave cloud storage and sync solutions hits the iPhone today. You’ll need a Dropbox account, but the iPhone app is free. With it, you can view your cloud files, sync pics or vids and download files for offline viewing. As a regular Dropboxer, I’ll be looking at this more in the near future.
Garmin nüvifone finds its way to U.S. (AT&T) — $299 gets you a nüviphone on AT&T’s network starting October 4. Garmin are the GPS folks and they’re starting to figure out that navigation on phones will seriously limit growth in the standalone GPS business. There will always be situations where a dedicated GPS device makes more sense, but there’s money in convergence. And in subscription fees, too — the nüvifone services run an additional $5.99 each month. Just about every modern phone is capable of the carrier’s navigation service, so I’m just not seeing the mass appeal here. Am I lost?
