We first heard of an e-book reader from iRex a month ago, and today the company has officially announced the DR 800SG. The reader will be launched in affiliation with Barnes & Noble, and the integrated Verizon 3G connectivity makes this a solid competitor to the Amazon Kindle. iRex is using Gobi technology, making the 800SG compatible with EVDO and HSPA 3G networks worldwide.
The reader is thin and light, sporting an 8.1-inch eInk screen. The screen requires interaction with the included stylus, as the iRex is reportedly using a Wacom active digitizer under the display. It will support many book formats, with eReader, EPUB, Fictionwise, TXT and PDF chief among them.
With the 3G connectivity and support for multiple formats, the DR 800SG is looking to be a viable contender for the e-book reader crown. It will be available for $399 in Best Buy stores in October.
