Hulu Gets Social, Schedules a Heroes Party

Well, this one slipped past our radar last week (we were busy re-programming our TiVos for the fall TV season), but Hulu made good on its promise from earlier this year to get more into the social viewing game. The premium content site released its Hulu: Watch Now Facebook app on Friday, allowing users to view and comment on shows.

Hulu is also throwing social viewing parties through Facebook. The site will be hosting a viewing event for the season four premiere of Heroes tomorrow night, and plans similar events for The Simpsons and 30 Rock.

We’ve been waiting a long time for Hulu to get more social. The site already has a lock on content from NBC, FOX, and ABC, and it’s built up an impressive and growing community of online TV watchers. Adding social functionality connects those two elements, and turns passive TV watchers into more engaged viewers (who hopefully watch more ads!).

Hulu’s social move also reinforces Facebook’s increasingly important role in the evolving world of social TV. Not only is it becoming the de facto platform for connecting viewers and allowing them to interact, it also served as a launch platform for NBC’s high-profile sitcom Community.

To learn more about social TV, and Facebook’s role in it, be sure to attend our upcoming NewTeeVee Live conference, where Facebook’s Randi Zuckerberg (among many other new media luminaries) will be speaking.
