eduFire, an online learning platform, has raised $1.3 million in a first round of funding from from Battery Ventures, Western Technology Investment, and Gokul Rajaram, who helped launch Google’s AdSense. Using eduFire’s service, anybody can set up a virtual classroom, where they can teach a live class. Teachers charge for their lessons, and eduFire takes a 15 percent fee in exchange for the use of its streaming video and audio tools. The company also offers a “SuperPass,” which gives users access to unlimited live classes in exchange for a monthly charge.
eduFire mainly offers language classes, and CEO Jon Bischke tells us that the company plans to use the new funds to expand further into other verticals. “We think there’s a huge opportunity brewing in the online space and the lack of an established go-to brand for online classes,” he says. The startup raised $400,000 in an angel round a year-and-a-half ago.
