MobiTV scored with the app it developed with CBS (NYSE: CBS) Sports to bring live-streamed NCAA March Madness games to the iPhone, and now it’s trying again — this time, partnering with NBC Sports to launch the Notre Dame Central app.
Notre Dame football fans will get eight live games, as well as VOD highlights from current and past games, press conference clips, news and even pregame alerts (complete with the university’s fight song), for $6.99. MobiTV CMO Ray DeRenzo tells Mediaweek that the success of the March Madness app paved the way for the new deal with NBC Sports, as well as an app for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC): “That app offered a pretty stellar experience,” he said. “And then people started calling us.”
The UFC app costs just 99-cents; fans get video clips, news and pin-up girl photos, but they can upgrade and stream live events for $44.96 via their iPhone or iTouch. Still, DeRenzo said even with the increased interest in MobiTV’s pay-to-play apps, the company is still committed to its subscription business. “We are not an app shop,” he said. “We’re doing this to deepen our relationships [with key networks] .. We learn what’s really compelling and stick that in our core product.”
