While MG Siegler — whom I greatly respect — is rightly gushing about an iPhone app that offers push notifications for Twitter and other services, I’m more excited about the new features for my Palm Pre Twitter client, Tweed. After all, Tweed can already run in the background and use the Pre’s native notifications to alert me with direct messages and mentions from Twitter. ;)
The newest version of Tweed, v0.9.14, hit the airwaves on Tuesday, and I got around to upgrading yesterday. Aside from a few bug fixes, the Pivotal Labs team added a few new features:
- Loading spinner/scrim no longer full screen — allows for user interaction/cancel if Twitter is slow
- Option to disable links in tweet list (still available from tweet popup)
- Ability to re-tweet own tweets
- Nearby timeline (can search within nearby, configure Nearby radius)
- Photo View
- Support for French (for Canadian users)
- Preference to open multiple cards per account
The most useful ones for me are the Photo View and the Nearby timeline, which shows Tweets within a configurable radius of my location. Currently, you can choose to see tweets within 5, 10, 20 or 50 miles of your current location.
Photo View is a time saver because Tweed can now show tweeted pics natively. It currently supports photos from TwitPic, tweetphoto.com (and pic.gd), yFrog.com and twitgoo.com. If a tweet contains a link to any of these photo services, Tweed shows a little picture icon in the tweet — tap it and it opens the photo. And if there are multiple photos, you can swipe left or right in Tweed to see them all. No longer do you have to wait for a browser card to open and load the picture.
The new Photo View is probably best appreciated with a pic or two, so here’s a sample of a tweet with pics from this morning. Sadly, it allegedly shows a fire at a Google facility in London — I hope everyone’s OK.
