Qualcomm, America Movil To Launch Zeebo In Mexico

Zeebo

For telecom magnate Carlos Slim it’s good to be the king … Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) has picked Slim’s America Movil as the wireless service provider for the launch of the new Zeebo console in Mexico.

The low-cost, downloadable content-based console will be available in Mexican stores later this year, per Reuters. Qualcomm invested an undisclosed amount in Zeebo last year; Qualcomm vet Mike Yuen recently joined Zeebo to oversee the console’s rollout in Mexico, among other regions.

This is America Movil’s second big partnership with Qualcomm; in July, it agreed to integrate Qualcomm’s widget-based mobile content platform across its network of more than 190 million wireless subscribers.

That massive market share (America Movil owns close to 80 percent of the mobile phone market in Mexico alone) is what has the Mexican government ready to auction off new wireless spectrum, in the hopes of drumming up more competition for Slim and America Movil.
