In Mexico, tycoon Carlos Slim controls close to 80 percent of the mobile phone market through his ownership of American Movil. That may change soon if the Mexican government has anything to do about it.
Mexico will be auctioning off spectrum in early September that will allow for new competition to enter the market, Reuters reports. For sale is the 1.7 and 1.9 Ghz frequencies, and the rules will be detailed by the end of the month or in early September. Potential bidders are: Spain’s Telefonica (NYSE: TEF), which is Mexico’s second largest cellphone operator, but doesn’t have the spectrum for 3G services; Televisa, a broadcasting company that already offers TV, internet and telephone bundles.
