Power Moms “Get” the Smartphone

Superwoman_lWe often discuss the rapid growth of smartphones, and it’s largely due to acceptance by mainstream consumers. A group that is grabbing smartphones in big numbers is the “power mom.” These moms have their hands full running busy households, with all the demands that come with that big task. The smartphone is evidently becoming the tool of choice for such moms to stay on top of bustling activities and keep things moving smoothly.

CNET News takes a look at the “power mom” endorsement of the smartphone, and the findings matches my own observations. A power mom they interviewed summed up the benefits of owning a smartphone succinctly:

“I liken it to broadband,” Molly Russell said. “Now that I have high-speed Internet at home, I’d never pay for dial-up. The same is true of my smartphone. I can’t go back to a regular phone. I don’t care how much it costs.”

I have lived with a power mom for over a decade, and I can attest to the demands on time and attention they constantly face. Keeping up with kids’ schedules is trying enough; interaction with schools and other organizations further complicates things. The smartphone can be leveraged in ways to make this task easier for power moms, and the savvy ones have been quick to recognize that.

I stopped in the local Target store the other day to pick up a few things. A harried power mom with three small children was in front of me, hurrying her children along (as much as is possible with small kids). They obviously had someplace to be in short order and needed to get out of the store quickly. As they were hurrying, the mom’s smartphone beeped and she grabbed it. She glanced at the BlackBerry and smiled.

“Caleb’s practice has been canceled; we can take our time now,” she said. She had obviously gotten an email notifying her of the cancellation, and they moved away at a much more leisurely pace. The smartphone saved the day for this mom with so much on her plate. It brought a smile to my face, too.
