Ericsson Doesn't Believe WiMax Will Be The 4G Standard

We’ve heard Nokia call WiMax the “Betamax” of wireless technology, and now Ericsson (NSDQ: ERIC) is jumping on the bandwagon with its own negative feelings on the subject.

“There are 400 million people using 3G (HSDPA/WCDMA) technologies today,” Ericsson’s CTO Hakan Eriksson told GigaOm. “There will be 70 million people using WiMAX in five years.” And by then, Long Term Evolution (LTE) will be the standard backed of large phone companies such as Verizon (NYSE: VZ), Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) and AT&T (NYSE: T) — just like how VHS won the early video format wars.
