NuevaSync Brings Push GMail to iPhone, Pre, S60

nuevasync-configurationPush Gmail. For some, it’s the elusive “Holy Grail” of productivity. Personally, I don’t want it — I get too much email as it is, so I just set my devices to do a mail check every 15 minutes. But I won’t let my personal preferences get in the way of what’s sure to be well received news by Gmail junkies everywhere. Josh writes in to tell us that NuevaSync, a service I looked at back in January, shed its beta tag and now offers push email support for Gmail.

The feature is part of NuevaSync’s Premium service, which will set you back $25 a year. What does that get you?

  • Gmail push support for iPhone, Pre, S60 and Windows Mobile devices.
  • Ability to sync up to 50 calendars on your handheld.
  • Use of servers dedicated to premium accounts.
  • Priority support
  • A recently added Gmail Archive feature that places the Archive label on selected messages instead of trashing them. This removes them from your device Inbox, but maintains a history of them for later use.

Essentially, the NeuvaSync service paired with Gmail offers some of what you get with Microsoft Exchange and ActiveSync. In fact, you configure the service on your handheld as you would an Exchange server connection.

But it’s not as robust as full Exchange, i.e.: there’s no Task sync yet (although the company is working on it) and it’s not something you’d likely use in an enterprise setting. Still, the ability to have Gmail messages pushed to a handset immediately after they hit the server offers a certain appeal. Just not to me — my phones would be notifying me every 30 seconds and I’d never get a blasted thing done! ;)

By the way, NeuvaSync has tested their service with other mail servers as well, so even if you don’t use Gmail or Exchange, you might still be able to get your mail pushed to you on arrival.
