Seems like every week an “old media” company tries to launch a new iPhone app — and most of the time, the companies try to make money (or at least offset the app development cost) through standard sponsorships.
But Turner Sports and the PGA of America are breaking the mold with their new PGA Championship app: They’re trying to generate revenue up-front from users (the app costs $1.99) in addition to getting ad revenues from sponsor ING (per Mediaweek).
The app includes live video-streaming and instructional clips, customized alerts on player progress and real-time score updates. Since it’s exclusive, die-hard fans will likely pay up and still put up with the ads for access to PGA coverage while they’re on the go. (It has already surged to the number five spot on Apple’s paid sports apps list).
