Earnings: Investment Income Sends The Knot's Profits Down; Local Lifts Ad Revs

Wedding Bouquet

The weddings industry tends to remain fairly strong in a recession. As such, weddings and related lifestyle media company The Knot didn’t do too badly on the revenue side in Q2. However, The Knot’s net income slipped to 26 percent to $1.7 million ($0.05 per share) in Q2 from last year’s $2.3 million ( $0.07 per share). The primary reason for the company’s profit drop was the $664,000 lost in interest income, due to lower rates earned on the The Knot’s cash and investments.

Revenues increased a modest 3 percent to $29.5 million from $28.7 million. National and local ad revenue was up 6 percent. The company attributed the gains to 7 percent growth in local online ad dollars, which could be due to The Knot’s expanded hyperlocal offerings. Merchandise revenue gained 14 percent, thanks to the acquisition of e-commerce wedding site eWish.
