The long-smoldering battle between Apple and Google is heating up in a big way, as evidenced by Eric Schmidt’s sudden (if overdue) departure from Apple’s board. The move was surely hastened by last week’s banishment of Google Voice from Apple’s App Store, which has sparked an FCC investigation, and I think Apple is likely to escalate the conflict by dumping (if not necessarily banning) pre-installed Google iPhone apps. Still, the bigger story here may be the FCC’s eagerness to intervene in the mess — which may signal increased meddling by the feds in coming months.
