Despite all the delays, mobile WiMax service revenues for network operators could hit $15 billion by 2014 as the number of mobile broadband subs is projected to reach 50 billion that year, according to a report by Juniper Research. The analyst calls mobile WiMax the “new DSL,” as consumers look to cut ties with their cable or satellite services. Secondly, many rural consumers are likely to remain out of DSL lines’ reach.
As the chart following the jump shows, the major markets — North America, western Europe and Asia — will collectively account for nearly 70 percent of global service revenues. The highest regional growth will be driven by the developing countries in Africa and the Middle East, South America and Eastern Europe. Since those areas haven’t had as much penetration by cable systems, as growth is expected to resume the next few years, those region’s consumers are expected to leapfrog right to mobile broadband.
