Qualcomm Going Strong: Thank Android

android logoqualcomm logoThe smartphone market is going strong, especially in emerging markets like China. The steady demand for smartphones in growing markets has benefitted smartphone chipmaker Qualcomm, and they are expected to report a good financial picture today. Analysts are predicting a strong second half of the year for the Android phone platform, and Qualcomm is expected to reap big benefits from the sale of these phones. Many Android phones will be based on Qualcomm chipsets, and it’s even expected to soon see the arrival of Android-based smartbooks.

Qualcomm is a founding member of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), the alliance created to develop the Android platform for Google.

“Qualcomm is a very important partner for Google and Android,” says Broadpoint AmTech analyst Mark McKechnie. “People looking at Android as a play in the back half of the year should think about Qualcomm.”

The company has made a calculated push into the Android world, by integrating software into the chips to provide good video handling and application support. Qualcomm executives see Android as “a really strong area of its portfolio.”
