Rajat Sharma’s India TV has agreed to return to the News Broadcasters Association (NBA), a voluntary coalition of news channels that had formed a self regulatory body–News Broadcasting Standards (Disputes Redressal) Authority.
The channel had quit NBA after the Authority, headed by former chief justice of India, J.S. Verma, imposed a Rs1 lakh fine following a complaint by one Farhana Ali that the channel had incorrectly dubbed in Hindi an interview she gave to Reuters. The self regulation mechanism was put in place after eager signs from the government that it would step in to regulate news channels. India TV’s walkout from NBA had thrown the whole process into jeopardy and many feared it would give the government just the right excuse to regulate news channels.
“India TV’s return has come after fundamental issues raised by the channel against the disregard to NBA’s rules and guidelines was appreciated by the association’s directors… (the) decision to return was sealed thanks to the sincerity of efforts led NBA President Mr G Krishnan and all other Board members,” India TV said in a statement.
Sharma will himself be joining the board of NBA now. The channel’s managing editor Vinod Kapri will be returning to the Authority in the eminent editors’ panel.
