Responding to Apple’s announcement it served 1.5 billion iPhone app downloads in its first year, multi-platform mobile app store GetJar has issued its own stat – but it’s far less impressive.
The site says it’s clocked up “more than half a billion” downloads – but that’s since the company was founded in 2004. In other words, annual iPhone downloads outstrip the 100 million annual average of probably the largest independent cross-platform store by about 15 times. That’s no doubt due to iPhone being a far richer handset than many which GetJar caters to – that’s not the fault of GetJar, which says it only has 20 staff; just Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) seems to have made one hell of a phone…
GetJar is also announcing a “rebrand” (from one ugly logo to another). Marketing VP Patrick Mork, in the release:
