Online TV re-broadcaster Zattoo has lost its UK country manager Alex Guest, who is leaving the company to launch his own forthcoming TV site TVPixie.com. Guest, who joined Zurich-based Zattoo in 2008 told paidContent:UK the new consumer site wouldn’t be a TV streaming competitor to his old employers but an ad-funded news and information portal for telly addicts. “It’s a platform for anyone enthusiastic about TV and will have reviews, listings and information. It will begin in the UK and we will hopefully roll it out to other countries after that.” There will also be a discovery element so people can find new things. There’s no launch date, but the site is being built now — a cache’d version of the front page can be seen here.
We? Guest is not alone: also joining the venture is Guest’s Zattoo colleague Alex Manalov who becomes TV Pixie’s chief technology officer. He worked on product management and business development in Zurich. And what about Zattoo’s future in the UK? The UK has never been a core country for Zattoo, which has a far bigger audience in Switzerland and Germany, he company claims to broadcast UK public channels through a legal loophole. But Guest says “Zattoo is going to carry on in the UK — this is a good market for it”. It’s unclear whether Zattoo will replace Guest, but CEO Beat Knecht told me the UK site was currently being “run in a lean fashion” and that user queries would be handled by English-speaking staff in Zurich.
