Today in Cleantech

Happy Friday! My favorite news tidbit of the day (so far) has been the bad news out of National Semi. Why would bad news make it to the top of my list? In order to bolster its sagging business, the company says it’s switching focus to higher-margin chips for niche markets, in particular energy management. The “green” market is very interesting to the weakened semiconductor business of late. I spent yesterday chatting with some other folks in the industry, and they all see a tremendous opportunity there. As one chipmaker put it, energy management touches everyone at both home and work. That’s a lot of market opportunity. (Be sure to stay tuned: Next week, we’ll have the first Research Note in a three-part series on green market opportunities for semiconductors.)
