One of the great visions of cloud computing is that one day, via a wire in the wall, we’ll all be able to tap into an unlimited flow of cheap, homogenized computing. Every “compute packet” will be the same, we will have a great big global computing power grid that we can tap into, and we’ll only pay for what we use. From the handset to the enterprise, a new age of computing utility will emerge.
Of course, the early reality could not be further from the truth. With storage and computing flung to the far four corners of the Earth, there is a huge spread in performance and cost. For many industries and applications, those parameters are inflexible.
So we want your help. One of our panels at Structure 09 will look at “The Myth of the One-Size-Fits-All Cloud,” hosted by our very own Stacey Higginbotham. It will bring together many of the people who are building or have built “custom” clouds and ask what the extended future holds for the evolution of cloud computing. Here is a link to the panel: http://events.gigaom.com/structure/09/schedule/
We’d like to know what question you would ask if you were the moderator, and to whom? We will give two passes, valued at over $1,000, to whomever offers up the best question — and we’ll make sure your question gets asked.
Please send your question, with the panel title as the subject line, to questions09@gigaom.com. You have 7 calendar days from this post to enter; winners will be notified directly. Good luck!
