Nokia: Let’s Do Away With Phone Charging Altogether

communications_radios_204596Palm created a fair bit of buzz, and deservedly so, with the Touchstone charger introduced with the Pre. This charger uses inductive technology, so the phone doesn’t need to be plugged into charge. The Pre is set on top of the magnetic Touchstone charger, and it begins charging the phone. This is the first phone to have this type of charging technology as an available accessory. Handset maker Nokia is working on technology that goes this one better by eliminating the charger altogether.

Nokia researchers are working on a method to charge phones using ambient radio waves. These radio waves are all around, and the Finnish phone maker is working to use them to provide power to charge phones. This is pretty exciting stuff if you can imagine never having to charge your phone again. If it’s in the air, it’s charging all the time. Don’t expect this technology to hit the market anytime soon, but it’s pretty heady stuff just the same.
