@ WWDC: Developers Show Off Functionalities Of New iPhone OS 3.0

imageApple (NSDQ: AAPL) usually reserves time at their events for developers to show off their new iPhone applications (And, with more than 50,000 now available, there’s a lot to choose from). Today was no different. Apple shared the stage with some of the companies that have already integrated some of the new iPhone OS 3.0 features into their applications. The new OS will come out June 17, or two days before the iPhone 3G S arrives. It will be free to current iPhone users, and cost iPod Touch users $9.95.

Here’s a couple demos to give you an idea of some of the upcoming OS’s capabilities:

Gameloft: Mark Hickey demonstrated Asphalt 5. It is the typical 3D racing game, but integrates access to iTunes. So, while you are taking a spin in the mountains, you can access your “car stereo” and create your own soundtrack using your own music library.

Airstrip Technologies: Dr. Cameron Powell said that the healthcare industry is flocking to the iPhone. The application allows you to get alerts to results of a patient’s lab results. Not only can they get detailed lab results, but they can also get a snapshot of the monitors in the room, to get “real-time wave” data, to see heart rate, etc.

TomTom: One of the new 3.0 features is turn-by-turn navigation. Peter-Frans Pauwels came on stage to demonstrate maps and navigation for the iPhone. The navigation app works in both landscape and portrait mode. Audio provides turn-by-turn queues, but there’s also a “TomTom” carkit — through the new accessories feature. It’s not just a holder that attaches the phone to the windshield, but it enhances the GPS signal, and provides speaker phone, a microphone and will play music through car stereo. It also charges your phone.

ngmoco: CEO Neil Young demonstrates “Star Defense.” ngmoco demonstrates in-play buying. It offers you another hundred hours of game play for a few dollars. It also allows you to play with friends, and head-to-head over the internet. The 3.0 features will be available around the launch of 3.0, but it’s available right now. It’s $5.99.

Zipcar: The application locates the most available Zipcars, and with the new embedded maps feature, you can see the nearest available cars, marked by green pushins. The coolest part is that the iPhone will actually unlock the car. There will be an iPhone adapter waiting in the car.

Line6 and PlanetWaves: Together, they’ve built an app that allows you to control guitar and amp from the iPhone. The iPhone allows you to turn the guitar into an acoustic six string, or play with multiple extortion. Unfortunately, the demo failed, and the guitar always sounded the same.
