I have some issues with IDC’s notion that applying telecom-style rate systems to cloud services is a good idea. ISVs do need to adopt billing schemes and mechanisms for enterprise cloud services that reflect their respective business values, but anything too complex almost defeats one of the biggest arguments for adopting SaaS in the first place. In my experience, telecoms have not been the poster children for upfront — or predictable — billing practices over the years. For consumer or SMB services, simplicity is the only way to go.
