Verizon: How FiOS Gets Viewers Engaged

I’m at the Parks Associates Connections Conference today, which is jam-packed with newteevee-related panels and speakers. Joseph Ambeault, Verizon’s director of product development and management for video services, just got done with his keynote. He had a few interesting tidbits about subscriber engagement on his service:

  • Casual games offered through FiOS TV (think: chess) didn’t take off until the company added a video window to run television alongside game play.
  • From Verizon’s perspective, widgets and plug-ins on your TV set are less about providing you with the weather, and more about keeping your eyeballs on the screen so they can upsell you VOD and other services.
  • The ability to push a button while watching a game to check on your players’ stats made Fantasy Football a hit with FiOS subscribers.
  • Social TV using Facebook and Twitter isn’t just about chat, Verizon considers those integrations a key recommendation tool.
