NVIDIA Tegra Netbook Running Windows CE Appears

We’ve been excited about the Qualcomm Snapdragon netbooks for a while, as an instant-on device with long battery life seems tailor-made for netbook usage. The Snapdragon is not the only game in town, however, as NVIDIA is beginning to rock its Tegra chipset and the first netbook has appeared with the Tegra in tow.

The Mobinova Elan is a typical netbook-like device with an 8.9-inch screen and typical hardware. What sets it apart is the NVIDIA Tegra stuff inside, which turns the Elan into a mobile workhorse. The Elan is using Windows CE to run things and while that doesn’t get our motor running it makes sense as the Tegra (like the Snapdragon) cannot run typical OSes like Windows. Android would definitely work on the Elan like WinCE so we expect to start seeing more options in the Tegra camp soon.

Engadget China got to play with the Elan and from the video they shot it looks promising. What will end up determining how practical a Tegra netbook might be (Snapdragon, too) will be the price of the devices. Folks are not going to pay the same as they would for other netbooks running a “full” OS.
