Verizon Wireless To Support Java

imageVerizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ), which has long used Qualcomm’s Brew technology for applications, has announced it will “embrace Java technology–and will provide Java developers clear access to Verizon Wireless’ network and customers” reports FierceMobileContent. I think “embrace” might be too strong a word — Verizon Wireless spokesman Jeffrey Nelson clarified that the carrier would support the technology in smartphones but only “look at” supporting it in feature phones. Verizon’s move means developers will have access to subscribers’ location, billing services and status. Java specs and APIs will be published on July 28.

The Register reports that Verizon is going past supporting Java, and plans to open its own app store. It will use Java Mobile Edition (Java ME) but not Mobile JavaFX.
