Sony Ericsson Launches One Year Of Free Movies With Purchase Of Phone

imageNokia (NYSE: NOK) may have Comes With Music, but Sony (NYSE: SNE) Ericsson (NSDQ: ERIC) has one-upped them, by jumping directly to movies. The struggling handset maker has officially unveiled “PlayNow arena with movies,” which provides up to 60 flicks for free over a 12-month period with the purchase of a select phone. Release.

As with Nokia’s Comes With Music, PlayNow has its limitations. Users will have to download the movies to their computers and then side-load them over to their phone, at which point they can be watched as many times as you like for up to 90 days. Users will be able to choose from around 15 movies at any one time, and can download a maximum of 60 movies a year. Once the subscription expires, a spokesperson said they will be able to contact their service providers to continue the subscription at an undetermined price. It’s unclear what movie studios Sony Ericsson is working with (although, you can probably bet Sony is one of them). However, Sony Ericsson said the catalog will include a “country-specific mix of classics and newer titles.”

At Mobile World Congress in February, Sony Ericsson revealed the company’s new “Communication Entertainment” strategy, which is designed to bring together its classic Walkman and Cyber-shot brands into the same phone, and also connect the phone more seamlessly to the Internet, TV, PC and more devices. In addition to yesterday’s movie announcement, the company unveiled the Aino, which will allow users to control their PlayStation 3 while on the go. Sony Ericsson also unveiled the Satio, which was code-named ‘Idou’ in Spain, and comes with movies and other multimedia features including a 12.1 megapixel camera with flash.
