Nokia Expands Research Lab To Berkeley; Will Study Browsers, Battery Life

imageNokia (NYSE: NOK) said today it’s opening up a new research laboratory in Berkeley, close to the University of California, Berkeley campus. The lab will officially be part of the Nokia Research Center in Palo Alto near Standford University. The lab, led by Dr. John Shen of the Palo Alto office, marks the 11th location worldwide.

The Berkeley location will be charged with working on mobile web browser technology and increasing a device’s performance while lowering power consumption, among other things. Already, the Nokia Research Center was working with and UC Berkeley on the “Mobile Millennium project,” which uses mobile phones as sensors to provide enhanced traffic data on major and arterial roads. Other labs are located in: Hollywood, Calif. Beijing, China, Helsinki and Tampere, Finland, and several other locations in Europe and other countries.

The labs complement the company’s other offices in California, including ones in Mountain View and San Diego. The company has been pairing back its West Coast locations, however, with the upcoming closure of its Seattle-area office in Kirkland, Wash.
