The portfolios for the jumbo 72-member council of ministers has just been announced and cabinet minister Ambika Soni will be the in charge of the ministry of information and broadcasting. Soni, a member of the upper house of India’s Parliament from Punjab, is a senior functionary of the Congress party and is perceived to be close to party chairman Sonia Gandhi. Soni will be seen as a friendly and approachable minister as she is a familiar guest in TV studios as a spokesperson of the Congress. Here’s an official profile of Soni.
Choudhury Mohan Jatua, the 71-year old Trinamool Congress MP from West Bengal, has been named the minister of state for information and broadcasting.
A. Raja will continue as the minister for telecom and information technology and Gurudas Kamat has been named minister of state for that portfolio.
