Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) has stopped the development on its mobile applications for smartphones (except for the iPhone, which has already been launched). People applying to beta-test the smartphone app received an e-mail beginning: “Yahoo! has decided to cease development of the Yahoo! Mobile smartphone app effective Wednesday, May 20th. So you will not be provided access to the beta program for this product. For the time being, we will be focusing our efforts on the newly-launched Yahoo! Mobile experience for browsers (available at new.m.yahoo.com) and for the iPhone (available via the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) App Store),” reports TechCrunch.
For the moment, non-iPhone users of Yahoo will have to access Yahoo’s services through the browser, but the company is planning “new apps for the Blackberry and other mobile platforms with a different look and feel than the discontinued smartphone app”. There still seems to be plans for Yahoo apps of some description on other platforms… maybe Yahoo just thought it needed to start from scratch?
