Report: Freemium To Generate $14 Billion By 2014

imageThe freemium model — which involves giving away applications and charging users for add-ons and special features (like for EA’s Battlefield Heroes)– will bring in $14 billion for the mobile industry by 2014 as app stores increasingly offer the ability to upsell premium content from within an app, according to Juniper Research. By comparison, Juniper predicts that mobile music will be worth $14.6 billion by 2013. Juniper argues that the freemium model also allows for more revenues from advertising, and could be a challenge to carriers by moving the payments to the application and away from traditional mobile channels.
