Clearwire Corporation (NSDQ: CLWR) has struck an alliance with Cisco (NSDQ: CSCO) that the company says enhance and expand the company’s Clear 4G mobile WiMAX services. Under terms of the agreement, Cisco will serve as the first provider of the Clearwire network’s intrastructure. Cisco will also build Clearwire’s new mobile WiMAX devices for the Clear 4G mobile WiMAX service, which is aimed at consumers and small businesses.Cisco is aiming to introduce its first mobile WiMAX device later this year. Clearwire currently provides mobile WiMAX services in Baltimore, Md., and in Portland, Ore., and plans to bring its Clear 4G service to more than 80 markets in the U.S. by the end of next year.
As UnStrung notes, the deal represents a “reawakening” of Cisco’s WiMax strategy. The company has had WiMax technology capabilities for some time, but the partnership with Clearwire represents its first major dive into the space.
