RIM Confirms the BlackBerry Storm 2

cimg1350The BlackBerry Storm is a love-it-or-hate-it smartphone and by media accounts, most seemed to hate it. The sales numbers don’t confirm the poor reception of the Storm, as it continues to be one of the top-selling smartphones in the world. There has been speculation about a successor model for awhile and now the folks at RIM have officially confirmed there will be one.

The Storm has firmed RIM’s push into the consumer market and while sales numbers aren’t provided, RIM CEO Jim Balsillie confirmed they are big enough to call for a refreshed model.

“We see this very large and untapped consumer market,” Jim Balsillie said during a presentation to analysts and investors, adding that more than half of RIM’s 25 million subscribers now fall into the non-corporate category.

Asked about whether the Storm — which debuted to mixed media reviews last year — has been a hit, Balsillie said, “That product was a huge success in terms of sales and adoption.”

RIM wouldn’t provide any details concerning what changes might be made on a “Storm 2″ but the large touchscreen is almost a given as it is squarely aimed at the consumer market. Hopefully RIM will add Wi-Fi to the new Storm, a feature the original is sadly lacking.
