Sawhorse Media, the company behind the Shorty Awards, has raised an undisclosed seed round to support its growing list of Twitter aggregation sites, paidContent has learned. Backers include Fred Seibert and Marta Wohrle. Sawhorse execs claim the company is “90 percent bootstrapped.”
The Brooklyn, NY-based company already has Musebin, a one-line music reviews site; VentureMaven, a site that collects tweets from VCs; and MuckRack, which follows reporters on Twitter (including a number of ContentNext staffers). Sawhorse is adding to its miniature all-things-Twitter empire with the launch of the self-explanatory ThePetFeed and GiantRedCarpet, which will let you check in on Ashton Kutcher and other Twittering A-listers without having to officially follow them.
I spoke to Greg Galant, Sawhorse’s co-founder and CEO, who said the company is refining its business model. For one thing, Sawhorse made some money selling tickets to the February Shorty Awards, which honored the best Tweets. But mostly, Galant expects to make money by helping marketers navigate Twitter. “We’ve gotten some interest from media companies and brands,” Galant said. “A lot of companies want to have their version of Twitter to curate the conversation. In the meantime, our plan is to launch a couple new sites every few weeks and go from there.”
